Spirit Walk

As the air begins to cool and the trees shed their leaves, the spirits of former citizens of Charlottesville and Albemarle County gather one last time before consigning themselves to the grave for the long, cold winter. Join the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society on its 20th Annual Spirit Walk to meet these memorable residents from our community’s past. Come learn their stories as they are vividly brought to life before you.

For the first time in the history of the Spirit Walk, you will be guided through Charlottesville’s historic Oakwood Cemetery.  Officially opened in 1864, Oakwood is the final resting place of many citizens, both well-known and long-forgotten.  On Friday, October 24th, and Sunday, October 26th, join us at the Oak Street entrance for a tour of this interesting cemetery.

Step back in time as you are guided through Charlottesville’s historic Court Square on Saturday, October 25th.  Included in this tour is the courtroom trial of Stuart Bailey who was accused of killing his brother-in-law, City Treasurer, John Walters.  Court Square tours begin at the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society, which is located in the McIntire Building on 2nd Street NE.

Dates/Times:

Friday, October 24th, 6:00 – 9:00 pm (Oakwood Cemetery)

Saturday, October 25th, 6:00 – 9:00 pm (Court Square)

Sunday, October 26th, 6:00 – 8:00 pm (Oakwood Cemetery)

Tours depart every 15 minutes and last approximately 1.25 hrs. Guests are encouraged to bring flashlights to Oakwood Cemetery.  Please wear comfortable footwear.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for children 10 and younger. Tickets can be purchased online at www.albemarlehistory.org or by phone (434) 296-1492. Large groups are encouraged to make reservations by phone. Box office hours are Monday through Friday 9:00 am – 12:00 pm. Tickets go on sale September 15th. Online ticket sales close at noon on the day of the event. Please note no refunds will be given.

If you have questions, please email admin@albemarlehistory.org.

The Spirit Walk is a fundraiser that supports the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that works to promote an appreciation of local history so that the past may shed light on the present and the future.
