Federal prosecutors want records from the Virginia Tobacco Commission related to former State Senator Phil Puckett’s recent resignation, which is already under investigation by the FBI. The commission released copies of two subpoenas to the Associated Press in response to a FOIA request. One subpoena ordered commission interim director Tim Pfohl to appear before a grand jury next Tuesday. The second subpoena requested various documents involving Puckett dating back to June 1st of last year. Puckett, who’s a Democrat, shocked Virginia’s political world earlier this month by abruptly resigning. That move flipped control of the State Senate to Republicans. Puckett was in line for a potential high-level job at the GOP-controlled Virginia Tobacco Commission at the time of his resignation. He later withdrew his name from consideration. Puckett has denied any wrongdoing, but he’s also hired an attorney.
