A local lawmaker’s crusade to reform the mental health system reached a national audience Sunday night. State Senator Creigh Deeds discussed his son, the late Gus Deeds, during a segment of the CBS news program “Sixty Minutes.” Deeds says his 24-year-old son was diagnosed as bi-polar in 2011. Gus Deeds stabbed his father at their Bath County home November 19th and then took his own life. Senator Deeds says he was alarmed by some of his son’s posts on social media sites. Those entries took place last fall while Gus was a student at the College of William and Mary.  Deeds says he’s committed to reforming the Virginia mental health system, and he’s authored several bills that are being reviewed in the General Assembly.
